U.S. Customs Inspect Imported Threat, Costing Americans Up To $138B Tomorrow

Taxpayers love to hear about anything and everything that could save them money. But, many of Americans don’t know that taking the time to inspect certain imports could end up saving them billions.

And there’s one import that’s accounting for the majority of U.S. Customs’ inspections this time of year. In fact, customs agents will inspect more than 1 billion of this particular import within a month’s time.

The Washington Examiner has the latest.

Customs and Border Protection officials are expecting to process and inspect more than 1 billion imported stems of flowers in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day next Wednesday, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed Friday.

Although the DHS agency is often associated with apprehending illegal immigrants and narcotics on land and sea, its Miami branch is known as the headquarters for floral importation inspections between Jan. 1 and Feb. 14 every year.

“People don’t think of agriculture when they think of Customs and Border Protection — however, CBP agriculture specialists work diligently to protect our country from invasive species that have the potential to damage ecosystems and our economy,” said DHS Deputy Secretary Elaine Duke.

Duke makes a valid point. This is a mundane but necessary part of protecting our country. And Americans should be thankful that customs agents are putting in so much hard work because the cost to taxpayers would be unimaginable if they didn’t.

CBP officers at the Miami facility processed more than 954 million stems of flowers in 2017 and intercepted more than 1,000 plant pests. Exotic pests and foreign animal diseases cost an average of $138 billion in economic and environmental losses every year.

We already pay for $138 billion in losses from foreign pests and animal diseases. Could you imagine how much that cost would increase if customs agents weren’t working hard to inspect every single flower that is imported to our country?

It would be insane. Not to mention how it could damage our natural ecosystems, and even Americans’ health as well.

It’s just another reminder to be thankful for the men and women who work hard each day to keep our country safe. Even if it’s just so we can send someone special a big bouquet on Valentine’s Day.
